YOUNGO towards COP 16
With COP 16 coming up soon, youngo is working on ensuring that youths at the negotiations are seen and heard! If you would like to take on lead roles to assist youngo in achieving this, these roles may be for you:
Interventions Co-ordinator
Description: Interventions are an important way for YOUNGOs to engage with the UNFCCC process. There were concerns that at COP15 the interventions were not as effective or inclusive as they could be, due to lack of prior planning. This co-ordinator would ensure that versions of intervention texts are drafted well before COP16, and ensure as best as they can that there is input from across the YOUNGO community. It was also suggested that YOUNGO build lobbies to support the interventions, which this co-ordinator could also take care of. This co-ordinator
should have good writing skills and knowledge of the UNFCCC process.
Tasks:
• Collecting input from the YOUNGO community about the topic/content of intervention texts
• Drafting and/or collecting drafts of intervention texts from the YOUNGO community
• Organising lobbies to support interventions
• Organising a speaker for interventions
Translation Google Group Co-ordinator
Description: The translation google group is used to ensure that there is equal access to essential
youth climate materials through translation. The co-ordinator ensures the google group is being used
and there is sufficient access to translation for YOUNGO members.
Tasks:
• Call regular meetings
• Initiate discussions about improving language access, and to communicate the translation
opinions to the broader community.
• Determine the amount of translation needed, for various languages, and ensure that there are sufficient translators. If not, to also recruit some more.
Policy WG coordinator
Description: This co-ordinator will advise on the functioning of the all the sub-groups and ensure that
policy is being communicated effectively across the WGs.
Tasks:
• Communicate with each policy sub-group to ensure they are active and looking at policy
• Make sure the WGs are communicating effectively with the YOUNGO community Young and Future generations day co-ordinator
YoFuGe Day Co-ordinator
Description: YoFuGe Day was a great success at COP15. The message of ‘the youth are here and we care’ was very well communicated. However, with a short timeframe left to organise YoFuGe Day, we now need a dedicated co-ordinator to ensure that this message becomes more explicit – what do the youth want? – and to ensure that YoFuGe day is as successful, if not more, than last year! The Co-ordinator would work with a team of YoFuGe volunteers. We need to
ensure we have a good message, content to back that up, a visual impact, and a media presence. The Co-ordinator would work towards making this happen. This co-ordinator would also investigate different ideas for YoFuGe
day; should we ask the youth to meet with their party delegates? What kind of actions? etc.
Tasks:
• Determining a date for YoFuGe Day
• Ensuring the YOUNGO side events on YoFuGe are co-ordinated and well-prepared; involves communication with relevant organisations. (Food was also presented as important organisational problem last year)
• Organising t-shirts or other similar visual props
• Collect suggestions from YOUNGO on ideas for YoFuGe day.
• Investigate the logistics of holding events such as Intergenerational Inquiry again.
• Ensure widespread awareness of YoFuGe day, by;
◦ Sending out press releases to media, and in other ways ensuring awareness amongst the media
◦ Confirming that youth media/comms people for each YOUNGO are aware of the importance and priority of YoFuGe day,
◦ Ensuring that YOUNGO members know exactly the aims and activities of YoFuGe day is (perhaps by preparing a small information pack or flyer)
YoFuGe Day volunteers
Description: YoFuGe Day was a great success at COP15. The message of ‘the youth are here and we care’ was very well communicated. However, with a short timeframe left to organise YoFuGe Day, we now need a dedicated co-ordinator to ensure that this message becomes more explicit – what do the youth want? – and to ensure that YoFuGe day is as successful, if not more, than last year! For this, we’re going to need a few dedicated volunteers to work with the
YoFuGe Day Co-ordinator to get this going.
Tasks:
• Working with the YoFuGe Day Co-ordinator on various tasks, which include but are not limited to;
◦ Helping co-ordinate media contacts and promoting media awareness of YoFuGe Day
◦ Help publicise the aims and activities of YoFuGe day amongst YOUNGOs
◦ Organising logistics of side-events and other YoFuGe activities
◦ Generally being an all-around star!
COP16 YOUNGO Delegations Co-ordinator
Description: In order that YOUNGOs contribute as much as possible to the UNFCCC process as possible, each YOUNGO delegation needs to have a clear set of aims (e.g. representing the voice of constituency), and a clear reason for being there. This Co-ordinator would keep track of each delegation and work with them to make sure they have a clear set of
aims, and that they have clear roles and tasks for each person being sent. This Co-ordinator would work closely with the UNFCCC focal points. This Co-ordinator would help delegations with structure and organising pre-COP training.
A great concern is that YOUNGOs are ‘burnt out’ after COPs for a month or two, and this Co-ordinator would try and make sure the structure of the delegation team avoids that – do they have a ‘base team’ at home, etc?
Tasks:
• Compile a list of all the YOUNGO delegations and their main contact person
• Establish where the delegations are at in terms of training, logistics, etc
• Provide support for delegations in the organisational process
• Ensure that each YOUNGO delegation has a clear set of aims, and helping them realise those if not.
